What is Kava?
Kava, or Piper methysticum, is the name for the plant or beverage made from the roots of the plant. People have been consuming kava for thousands of years in the south Pacific. Kava grows best in volcanic soil and rainforests at higher elevations in soil that drains well. The Republic of Vanuatu arguably produces the best kava in the world but kava also grows in Hawaii, the Fiji Islands, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Samoa, and Papua New Guinea. Currently there are people experimenting with growing kava in California and Florida as well.
People consume kava for social, recreational, and medicinal reasons. Most people that drink kava in kava bars do so for recreational and social reasons primarily.
